1. Organization and Planning of Schedules – Attorneys and lawyers are busy people where the time they have available is at a premium, so they need someone who can optimize the time they have available to them each and every day. So they need a legal secretary who is able to organize their schedules in such a way that all their time is put to best use.
2. Preparation of Documents ? There are all kinds of documents that will need to be prepared both used internally and externally within the firm. It is often your responsibility as the secretary or legal administrative assistant to prepare such documents and what is produced may well vary from one law firm to the next.
3. Filing Legal Documents – This is a very important task that many secretaries or administrative assistants in a law firm will be required to do. Along with actually producing the necessary document that is involved when a case goes to court they will be expected to file them with the court as well. The secretary who is tasked with this particular job has to be meticulous and accurate when producing the documents and is someone that the lawyer can trust to ensure that they are filed with the court on time.
4. Preparation for a Trial – Generally it is the responsibility of the lawyer to carry out the research for any trial cases, but actually preparing what has been found will need to be done by their secretary. So it is a good idea if they not only have a basic understanding of legal matters but are willing to learn more. 5. Doing Research – Precedents make up a very important part of any legal process and so the need for good quality comprehensive research to be done. 6. Maintaining Files & Typing Correspondence ? Of course no secretary?s job will be complete without them having to do other tasks which may seem more menial. However, a secretary with good organizational and typing skills is going to be highly in demand. In fact because there are numerous legal documents to be completed and correspondence is required to keep the clients abreast of what is occurring a large part of a legal secretaries time will be taken up in typing and maintaining files.
