Many business owners have a product-based focus instead of a marketing based focus. You can have the best product but if no one knows about it, no sales are made. Marketing is very important in building a successful business and a key component of marketing is copywriting. You must use good copywriting if you want to run a successful business.
Why is copywriting so important for online business opportunities? Prior to understanding its importance in an internet marketing business, I focused my efforts of product creation. Even though I launched a new product every month, it did not necessarily make me more money. I needed a way to sell all of these new products I was creating and I needed it quickly. Therefore, I decided to focus on copywriting for my business.
One of the best copywriters in the world, Joe Sugerman once said that you can tell if copywriting is good if it gets the person reading the copy to get their money and buy the product or service. Words mean nothing in copywriting if there is no action. Here is how you write copy that causes action.
1. Research
There is an old saying if you fail to plan you plan to fail and this is true with copywriting for online business opportunities. You must research before you write. Research starts with looking at the potential customer. Identify the frustrations and problems that your prospective customer wants solved. Taking this one step will help you to resonate in the mind of your customer and make more sales than your competitors who fail to do this.
A great way to make your copy stand out is to research the vocabulary and buying bias of your customer. Take for instance engineers. If you write sales copy that is very analytical and use vocabulary that engineers use, your copy is going to be more effective with them.
Learn about your customer so you can draft a sales letter that is focused on that customer, not a general person. Personalization is the key.
Part of your research should also include looking at the product or service you are offering. You want to identify the features and benefits for any online business opportunities you are promoting. Make a list of them so you can refer back as needed. The features of the product are what the product actually does. The benefits of the product are how these features help the customer. One way to quickly identify the benefits is to go over the features and ask yourself ?So what?? Answering this question will make your copywriting better.
2. Index Cards
When writing good copy you should recall your school days and bring back index cards. The use of these cards is great when copywriting. Use the cards to help track the answers to the questions your customer has in his or her mind. This will give you the information you need about your customer to write better. Also, include the features and benefits of your product on the index cards.
As you create the cards, write down the sentences that you want to include in your sales letter. This gives you a head start in the writing process. You do not need to write the final draft, just the main idea as a reference point.
Taking this extra step will make your life so much easier because you can just use the cards to write. Dan Kennedy taught me this technique.
These simple steps for writing copy for online business opportunities will go a long way towards improving your copy. Skipping these steps however can hinder your efforts to write copy that sells.
