Choosing a College: What You Need to Consider

Choosing a proper college is an important step in the life of a young person. In fact, it could have a big impact on the rest of your life. If you are not sure how to make such an important choice, then a brief look at my handy guide could be valuable for you.

These are the basic factors that you have to think about when choosing a college:

1. Location. Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go far away? These are the two extremes but you have to consider how far you can afford to travel and also how much you need to be at home. If you need to be near your home you can stay at home and commute to college, or you can go to a college in your region (within 300 miles). Once you have chosen your region, you can consider other factors.

2. Cost. The cost of getting a higher education in the U.S. has skyrocketed over the past forty years and you really have to match your desires with your family’s budget. If you are budget conscious, look for state or city colleges that offer relatively low fees but provide good education. If you do not have these limitations, then look for the prestigious but expensive private colleges. When checking into the costs of going to any college, private or public, make sure to see what kinds of scholarships you may be eligible for.

3. Do you know what you want to study? If you have a strong idea of what you intend to major in, or what career you are aiming for, then this can help simplify your choice. Suppose you want to be a doctor. In that case you should choose colleges with strong pre-medical programs. Ask your guidance counselor to give you a list of colleges that match your career objectives. If you are still not sure about what area of study you will concentrate in then look at schools with a good liberal arts program or look for colleges that have several strong departments that you can choose from later on in your college career.

4. The Prestige Factor. Getting into a college that is well-known for its academic excellence can help you to get a better job later on in life or could help you get into the graduate school of your choice. If you have good high school grades and high SAT scores then you may want to apply to colleges that are highly-selective, and well-regarded. You can get an idea of the relative rankings of colleges by taking a look at the U.S. News and World Report’s annual guide.

When applying to a highly-selective college it is important to also apply to other colleges that have easier entrance requirements. It is always good to have a backup!

These are the main factors to consider when choosing a college. Think about them carefully, do your basic research and you should be able to find a college that is suited to your needs and objectives.
