At what age do most kids start looking for jobs? A common age that kids start thinking about acquiring extra spending money and getting a job is probably around the 15 to 16 year old age. What then, do you do if you have an exceptional teen that is highly motivated and younger than that? If you are looking for jobs for 13 year olds or 14 year olds, most companies wont hire someone so young. This leaves that age group out in the cold when it comes to earning extra money.
Younger teens are a little to young to go out and be hired in the real world. Few companies would hire 13 or 14 year olds and this leaves them without too many ways of making money. However, this is not all bad though as it challenges the young teen to come up with their own ways of making money. Typically this means trying to make money babysitting, pet sitting, car washing or other things that they can do an perhaps get paid for by people in their neighborhood.
When a child is forced to be creative, sometimes some great things can result. If a young teen is not eligible for any jobs with real employers, they can sometimes use it to their advantage and find alternative ways. This will ignite an entrepreneurial spirit that they might be able to cultivate and benefit from later in life.
Young teens should think of jobs where they can make money but have fun too. It is too early in life to have serious work and they need to have something that they can have fun, learn responsibility, and get paid too. This is a time when they get their feet wet learning about work and money and hopefully they will start to understand that you have to labor for everything in life and nothing is just given.
For those teenagers that are hoping to get jobs from real companies this summer, hopefully they have gone out and done some networking first. This summer is shaping up to be an awful one for job seekers and those teens that started the job hunt early will undoubtedly be the ones to get the jobs.
