A British society of films, television, video games, and other visual arts, and crafts called BAFTA, i.e. British Academy of Films and Television Arts organised award ceremonies every year, which are called the British Academy Film Awards.
British Film Academy was formed in’47 by that time leading figures like Carol Reed, Alexander Korda, Charles Laughton, Roger Manvell, and many other names. It was formed purely to reward the fruitful works of the artists in the film industry, but in’58, the Guild of Television Producers and Directors merged with it to form a new society in which, the film and television people were regarded the same. This union of films and television was renamed as British Academy of Film and Television Arts in’76.
BAFTA is a charity society, and its purpose can be defined as to “support, develop and promote the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public”. Not only the high-end awards are distributed to the celebrities, but it also arranges annual educational or academic events to acknowledge the achievers.
Its sponsors include around more than 6000 from the field of visual commercial arts. Its headquarters are in Central London, Piccadilly Street, however regional offices are in Scotland, Wales, New York and Los Angeles.
The British Academy Television award ceremonies usually take place in the months of April, or May. A common name given to these awards is the “BAFTAs”. They are often mentioned as British equivalent to Oscars. The year’54 marks the annual conduction of these awards.
