The vending business model is high profit, close to recession proof and fairly simple to manage if entrepreneurs understand how to start the business up properly and run it well on an ongoing basis. Here are some tips, tricks and advice on how to start up a successful vending company.
1) Don’t quit your job! The best way to start off your vending business is to do it part time at first. New business ventures often don’t produce a reasonable return in the first few months so you may need funds to fall back on.
2) If you’re considering buying a route that already exists, be sure to do some research and make sure that the seller is being honest and has good reasons to sell. You can do this by going through business records and by observing the route to estimate the income that can be derived from the assets that you are buying.
3) Don’t start off by buying more machines than you need. Many people make the mistake of ordering too many machines and they end up getting stuck with machines that they can’t place. You will find that there are some great deals on second hand machines out there if you look around.
4) Become experienced in of tracking which products are selling well at each location. Try out new products but at the same time make sure that your machines don’t run out of customer favorites.
5) Get together with other vending business owners and discuss ways of possibly working together. Learn from each other and look for advantages to be gained from mutual cooperation such as swapping machine locations to make your routes more compact.
6) A smile and a polite conversation is usually welcomed at each of your stops along your route, but you should always try not to become too familiar with people at each location as it can lead to wasted time. Always keep your machines clean and attractive. A dirty machine is a big turn off as it could lead customers to assume that the vended products are not fresh.
7) Make sure that your machines rarely run out of products. You can always double up on high volume items or you might risk losing the account to a competitor who is more organized.
Be organized. Manage your time well and learn the systems that you can implement to manage stock, machines, employees and routes.
9) Have a logo designed and put it on your vehicle, your uniform, your machines and your stationery. Stand out in the market! Try to attract customers by implying that you are a trustworthy and established business.
10) Once you have one machine in place, try to encourage location managers to take another. A drinks machine could compliment a snacks machine. If they occupy a large site then it may be possible to place another machine elsewhere on their premises or even in another branch of their business.
These are just a few tips and ideas to inspire you to get started in the vending industry or to help you to improve your existing operation.
