It’s too simple to gaze back over one’s life, regret not having successfully pursued a university diploma, and simply file that regret away as a missed opportunity that will not come again. It does not have to be so. There are many reasons why otherwise qualified individuals may never have pursued, or merely failed to complete, a university degree. The truth is that not everyone is in a position, be it academically, financially or socially to attend a college or university straight out of high school. Additionally, there are many things which legitimately draw university and college undergrads from their studies before they attain their degrees. What’s essential to realize is that post secondary education is not a once in a lifetime opportunity.
You’re working full time but now that the kids are grown and you’ve got more time to yourself you have more time to think about what you might have once studied in university or college and what it would have been like. Why not take a night course or two and see where it leads?
## Mature students
You got a job right out of high school; that was thirty years ago. You never regretted it and enjoyed a couple of successful careers but you’ve always wondered what you missed. Depending on the courses you might find any number of individuals coming to their post secondary careers at similar points in their lives.
## Returning students
You thoroughly enjoyed your undergrad years but when your Father got sick twelve years back and needed someone to help with the business you left university and came home. Now, twelve years later, the family business sold, your spouse keeps encouraging you to return to university and pick up your dreams where you left off. ## Veterans
You are back now from your 2nd tour of duty in the middle east with new ideas about what you want to study. The Post 9/11 GI Bill has given you choices you might not otherwise have and a lot of colleges and universities have veteran education support services in place.
It’s not just teenagers enrolled in university degree programs. Campuses are incredibly diverse and inclusive places where all manner of people at different points in their lives and sometimes with very different goals come together in the pursuit of a common dream, higher education.
