To those of you who want to be the best writer you can be, here are some basics of writing. I know this maybe dated information but without the full understanding of writing, you cannot progress. Learning the basics can help create a foundation for the writing world. You may surprise yourself after taking a writing class that the talent is natural, but difficulty in setting up description can take a person out of the reading very rapidly. It can destroy a potential fan. To even dream of being accepting in the writing world you need to know the basics.
Plot is the easiest basic principal to understand. It is the events that happen, in some kind of order, in the story. The events do not have to be in order, but it needs to be in an understandable order. The plot guides the reader through all the interesting events, much like follow the leader, taking the reader from start to finish. Plot is made up of five main points: the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. By making sure that the novel or short story follows this structure it is considered complete and rational.
Setting is another thing that people forget about or not make known very well. It happens to be the time and place of the story. It can be as easy as day and time or much more complicated as city descriptions and climate. How much detail that is in setting can be either very broad or very minuscule. The more realistic, or intense, the setting is, the more involved the reader will become. A good setting description creates the atmosphere of the writing. It can also affect the tone, mood, and quality.
Characters are another major basic aspect of writing. Without characters, there are no people, objects, animals, etc. to move the story along. Here the more realistic the characters are the more believable the experience is. Characters are literally the beings that the author is manipulating to move the story along, to hopefully reach a better understanding of their situation than they did at first. Protagonist, antagonist, static, flat, are all types of characters. The point of a good character is to create someone that is believable, relatable, and understandable, whether or not they are “good” or “evil.”
In conclusion without the basic aspects of writing, the story fails. In some cases without these, the story might not even be considered complete. The amount of time used to develop these three aspects will vary, paying more attention to some over others, however being aware of how much care is given to the points can enhance your writing. Good luck!
