The required courses that can be taken by dentists that intend to further their education in the field of dentistry is determined by the rules being put into practice in the place where he or she is accredited to practice.
There are places wherein it is not only the dentists who are required to take lessons to keep their knowledge up to date. The instructors are also required to qualify to certain standards before they can provide instruction. Say for instance in some regions, the facilitators are examined by the course providers in terms of their resume, course content outline, educational objectives, teaching methods employed, and records of attendance.
The aim of the continuing education in dentistry is similar to that of the bachelor’s degree, to boost the knowledge, skill and competency of the dentists in his or her field of practice.
The course offerings for this continuing education can be very comprehensive although there are only a small number of courses that can be considered as must-take subjects. These are limit the number of infection, basic life support and related rules implemented in the area where the dentist is practicing.
There are instances when the course offerings can be grouped into two major fields. One is the field that mainly gives advantages to the licensee providing further personality development. The other one is in the field that covers the actual performance of dental care to the patients.
Under the first category the topics usually offered include human resource administration, peer assessment, and study of dental cases. The subjects that can be taken under this category are restricted only to specified number by some agencies that tender the dental license.
The topics on the second category is chiefly concerned with preventive services; diagnostic procedures and actions; planning various comprehensive treatment; patient diet and eating habit; dentistry’s role during health emergencies in the community; disaster prevention and control; and selection, incorporation and use of new innovative technology in the field of dentistry.
There are other topics that can be incorporated in the actual delivery of dental services category. This will include assessment, selection and use of instruments for dental practice and sterilization; anesthesia; legal needs with regards to delegation of responsibility to employees and preserving patience privacy; and cultural capability.
