Have you ever considered becoming a lifeguard? It looks like fun, right? You get to hang out at the beach or pool all day, get a sun tan and while away the afternoon, right? Well, don’t be fooled by appearances. It’s not that easy to become a lifeguard and it can be surprisingly challenging.
Think about it. It’s a huge responsibility knowing that you are there to prevent people from drowning. They are depending on you to save their lives if they get a cramp or get tired when swimming. It’s the lifeguard’s job to make sure everyone follows the rules of the beach or pool and stays safe.
When someone shows signs of drowning it’s up to you to take notice and jump in the water to save them. You also have to use correct rescue techniques. If you don’t you may find yourself in trouble.
Knowing all this, if you still are interested in becoming a lifeguard, here are a few things that may help you out.
Becoming A Great Lifeguard
Stay on top of the chlorine levels of the swimming pool. It’s important because it can decrease by 1 ppm per hour in really hot weather. Always check the chlorine and other chemicals about every hour.
You should also be careful not to get too comfortable in your lifeguard chair, because you don’t want to fall asleep. Get up periodically and move around. Do some stretches to make sure are alert.
Always show up for work well rested and eat healthy. If you are sluggish and tired you may fall asleep on the job and that can be dangerous.
Be a strict about the rules. They are created for a reason, so if you see someone breaking them blow your whistle. Give them one warning and if they continue to break the rules make them get out of the pool.
Before you start your shift, check the first aid kit to make sure it has everything you might need.
